5.10 Periodic poling of thin films

L1 Phenomenon

To convert colours efficiently, the crystal's polarization is flipped in stripes a few micrometres wide. A comb electrode on the film carries a short high-voltage pulse; under each tooth the domains reverse.

Gap 10 µm (template), film 0.6 µm. Field solved once per volt (finite volume; LN free permittivities; SiO2 and Si permittivities and the air cover are template) and scaled by V/g derived. Reference fields: 21 kV/mm bulk CLN reported, 28.2 kV/mm thin film S, peak above 3 Ec = 63 kV/mm in practice P. d_eff uses d33 = 34 pm/V (older-scale compilation) template.

At periods near 600 nm neighbouring domains merge at lower pulse fields. Domain shapes template.

L3 Details and open points

  • Thin-film coercive fields exceed bulk; candidate reasons given are bonding to SiO2 and Li+ out-diffusion during LNOI annealing P.
  • Domain quality is checked by confocal SH microscopy and PFM P, P(abs); in bulk, by HF etching of the -z face for 20 min P.
